Merit Selection

Appointments to positions with the Council are made on the basis of merit. This means the applicant considered to be the most capable of doing the job is selected. Choosing the best person for the job is part of the Council’s policy of equal employment opportunity.

Selection is usually carried out by a Selection Committee of two or three people that generally includes:

  • The manager or work group leader of the position.
  • At least two people who are familiar with the work to be done.
  • An independent.
  • At least one representative from both genders.

Preparing Your Application

The written application is the basis on which the Selection Committee choose who will be interviewed for a position. It is important that you apply correctly and address the selection criteria otherwise your application may not be considered. Find out how to prepare your application and write a Statement of Claims against the selection criteria.

Interview

Applicants are selected for interview based on the strength of their written application in response to the advertisement. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your job interview.

Pre-Employment Checks

If you are selected as the preferred candidate for a position, you may be required to satisfactorily undertake some pre-employment checks prior to being offered the position. Depending on the role, you may be required to undertake a Working with Children Check, a Criminal Records Check or psychological testing. You will be informed at interview the requirement to undertake a particular check for that particular position and what it involves.

Most staff will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Medical.

Overseas Applicants

Council will only consider applications from applicants that have the right to work in Australia. If you are unsure whether you have the right to work in Australia, please contact the Department of Immigration.
