Ryde Riverwalk: Next Stage

Overview

Ryde Riverwalk through Memorial Park

Ryde Riverwalk through Memorial Park

The popular and award winning Ryde Riverwalk is a series of pedestrian and mixed use paths along the shores of the beautiful Parramatta River. It provides an opportunity for the community to engage with the Parramatta River foreshore within the City of Ryde, particularly with its history and environment.

The objectives for the project are reinforced by State Government initiatives which aim to support increased access to the Parramatta River foreshore via recreation networks. There are a number of crossover benefits for the development of the Walk as a regional trail.

The relationship between the foreshore and the river varies within the City of Ryde section of the Parramatta River. This is due to the varied geology and topography. The western section has generally gentle undulating slopes with wide bays fronting the river. The eastern section has a more convoluted landform with steep ridges extending to the river.

The pattern of open space along the foreshore edge also varies due to the landform and the histories of filling bays which has formed bushland reserves and sports fields. In addition there are public parks on the foreshore that have been formed due to the conversion of former industrial sites.

Ryde Riverwalk Masterplan

The Ryde Riverwalk Project has been guided by the Ryde Riverwalk Masterplan, which was adopted by Council in 2007.  The Masterplan is based upon strategic Government planning instruments and guidelines such as the:

  • Sharing Sydney Harbour Access Plan (DIPNR 2003)
  • Sydney Harbour Catchment Sydney Regional Environmental Plan (Dept Planning 2005)
  • Sydney Metropolitan Recreational Trails Framework (DIPNR 2005, updated 2011)
  • Walking Sydney Harbour (State and Local Government)
  • Metro Strategy( Dept of Planning 2005)
  • Australian National Cycling Strategy 2005-2012( Austroads 2005)

Ryde Riverwalk Project - next section

The next section planned for the Ryde Riverwalk is the connection between Bill Mitchell Park to Glades Bay Park and formalising paths within Looking Glass Bay Park, including a link to Banjo Paterson Park.

Council remains committed to continuing with a connection between theses parks and welcome any comments, ideas and suggestions.

Ryde Riverwalk Project - Community Consultation

Council carried out community consultation in the latter part of 2011 in an effort to collect, tabulate and consider any issues, ideas and thoughts the community had concerning:

  • the location of the path
  • the types of materials the path could be built from
  • any surveying and boundary issues
  • any effects upon security
  • any need to install lighting
  • how the local Aboriginal heritage items can be preserved
  • which sections of the Riverwalk are suitable to cycling
  • which sections of the Riverwalk are suitable for walking
  • how the path would impact upon the existing mangroves
  • how the path would connect the dinghy storage area

The council invited 2,000 local residents and community representatives to attend community workshops to discuss this section of the project.

Community Workshop 1 was held on 2 May 2012. was attended by approximately 40 people.

Community Workshop 2 was held on 30 May 2012 and was attended by approximately 30 people

The outcomes of the two workshops include:

  • all the safety concerns were heard and recorded
  • all the survey and boundary concerns were heard and recorded
  • all the visual impact concerns were heard and recorded
  • four potential locations of the path were discussed and issues with each were heard and recorded.
  • all the Aboriginal heritage issues were heard and recorded
  • all the European heritage issues were heard and recorded
  • all the potential crime and unruly behaviour issues were heard and recorded
  • precedent photos and path concepts currently in place along the Parramatta River and beyond were discussed and considered.

Ryde Riverwalk Project: Public Exhibition

At their meeting of 11 December 2012 Council resolved to place the draft detailed design and Statements of Environmental Effects for the Ryde River Walk on Public Exhibition for a period of three (3) months.

Draft design plans for two sections of the Ryde Riverwalk Project are now on public exhibition.

The proposed sections are:

  1. A boardwalk from Bill Mitchell Park to Ross Street Road Reserve and the formalisation of existing bush tracks within Glades Bay Park. There is no proposal to increase the size of the dinghy storage area at Ross Street Road Reserve.
  2. A boardwalk in Looking Glass Bay Park to provide pedestrian access to Bernard Street, and the formalisation of existing bush tracks within this park.

The draft detailed design plans for these two sections of the Ryde Riverwalk are supported by two Statements of Environmental Effects, which are also on public exhibition.
