The original Top Ryde shopping centre was erected in 1957 and was the first Post War retail mall on the American model which was erected in NSW. The land was amalgamated by the Council and purchased by A.J. Benjamin & Co who had their initial store in Chatswood. The dominance of this regional shopping centre was eventually eclipsed by the expansion of major retail complexes at Macquarie Park, Chatswood and Parramatta and it became a more localised centre.
