Eastwood Town Centre

Eastwood is located approximately 16km west of Sydney. The town centre is located in a valley surrounded by a number of hills and straddles the Northern railway line.

Eastwood is a busy and attractive town centre. The streetscape is dominated by small retail shops which create an active but relaxed atmosphere for residents and visitors. The centre benefits from a variety of open spaces that provide a good opportunity for interaction.

The main retail centre of Eastwood is to the west of the railway and is centred on Rowe Street. The area is known for its active street life and variety of shops.

The eastern side of the station has an active restaurant scene. Retailers of small household goods such as chemists, newsagents, bookstores, offices and professional rooms are also significantly represented. Previously this area was dominated by bulky goods or light industrial premises. A number of these sites are being redeveloped for commercial and residential use.

The Eastwood Railway Station serves as a major interchange for bus and rail services and is a focus of activity. It also provides access to the large number of facilities that serve the community within the town centre being the mall, parks, library, childcare centres, schools, fire station, police station, community facilities and churches.

Currently residential areas are generally limited to the fringe of the Centre with apartment buildings on the eastern edge and the remaining areas characterised by single dwellings. However, the re-development proposed by the owners of the Eastwood Shopping Centre will include residential apartments.

Vision

Eastwood will take its place as a significant town centre in Ryde building on its existing strengths and character and will be designed for the enjoyment and utility of pedestrians as a place which allows convenient access between home, work, shopping and leisure.

A visioning document in the form of a draft Master Plan for Eastwood was prepared in 2006. However, the study was put on hold in 2007 in order that detailed traffic and flooding studies could be undertaken. The findings and results of the draft Master Plan will be incorporated into a new centre specific section of the Development Control Plan to accompany the Ryde Comprehensive Local Environment Plan 2011. This section will enable a comprehensive understanding of the town centre and allow the preparation of planning controls to guide the future development of the centre.
