Illegal Dumping 

Illegal dumping of household items continues to be a widespread problem across the City of Ryde. Dumped items, are not only unsightly, but can also encourage others to add to the pile whereby it can become dangerous.

City of Ryde Enforcement Officers patrol the streets of Ryde and any dumped rubbish which is outside of the cleanup time is taped off and investigated. Dumping of rubbish is an offence under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and Council can issue a clean up notice for those that are responsible. This includes a $433 administration fee, and/or fines for unlawful transport of waste which can exceed $750.

Many items illegally dumped could potentially have been reused or recycled. Instead of simply dumping unwanted materials there are a number of options available to residents:

• Council provides five scheduled Council Cleanup Collections a year.  A waste collection calendar identifying your dates is delivered each year. Ensure material is not placed out earlier than the weekend prior to your scheduled collection date or you may incur a fine. Gas bottles, building materials, tyres and untied vegetation are not accepted.
• Charities including St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army may accept second hand items, however please do not dump items in front of the clothing bin
• The Bower is a reuse and repair cooperative that collects, repairs and resells goods in reasonable, re-usable condition. For more information contact them on 02 9568 6280.
• WSN Transfer Station on Wicks Rd in North Ryde accepts most items however, there is a charge.
• If you have an old computer or monitor, Council will collect it free of charge to be disposed of correctly. Alternatively if the computer is functional donate it to charity.
• Sell them! Hold a garage sale to sell unwanted items and make some money. Put items up for sale on www.ebay.com.au or www.tradingpost.com.au , you can also give away your items on websites such as www.e-cycled.com or www.freecycle.org
