The first step in the journey to revitalise Ryde Town Centre was taken today with the signing of an historic agreement between the City of Ryde and Bevillesta Pty. Ltd. for the sale of a stratum lot of land.
Sale of the 1317 sqm of Council-owned land, (Stratum Lot 11, 1 Devlin Street, Ryde) and the lease of land under and over Devlin Street, provide the basis for an integrated traffic management solution for the area, and the construction of ramps, underpasses and spurs that will allow the redevelopment of Top Ryde Shopping Centre to proceed.
The signing of the Put and Call Option for the sale of a stratum lot, as well as the signing of an Agreement to Lease land under and over Devlin Street, to Bevillesta Pty. Ltd. followed resolutions passed at the Council meeting on Tuesday 13 December 2005 that were cheered by the local community who packed the public gallery.
City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Ivan Petch, said, “This is a great result for the City Council, the future of the Top Ryde Shopping Centre and the local community.
“This transaction marks the beginning of a process that will ultimately lead to a more efficient and safe traffic system for Devlin Street – one of Sydney’s major thoroughfares – and to the future revitalisation of the Ryde Town Centre.
“The people of Ryde deserve a town centre that is vital, clean, safe and attractive and today we are taking one important step closer to achieving that vision.”
General Manager, Development for Bevillesta, Mitchell Corn, said: “We have been working towards this outcome for many years. Over four years ago, Bevillesta identified the need to purchase land from Council to enable an efficient traffic system to be implemented.
“Together with various other groups including the Ryde Chamber of Commerce and the RTA, we have worked through all the issues to solve some of the traffic issues in this area to allow the urban renewal of the Ryde Town Centre.”
The documents are subject to approval by the State Government and will be presented to the Director of Planning in January 2006. Once Gazetted, work could commence in April 2006.
