Commercial Waste Collection Service
Businesses located within the City of Ryde do not pay for a waste service as part of the property rates. The City of Ryde however, does encourage all businesses to try to reduce the amount of landfill waste they produce and this is reflected in the competitively priced commercial waste collection service offered.
For users of this service, free information, resources, and on-site visits are available to help businesses reduce the amount of waste they produce.
Fluorescent Light Recycling
City of Ryde is now offering residents an opportunity to recycle their fluorescent light globes and tubes for free.
Residents can drop off their globes and tubes at:
- Civic Centre Customer Service area (1 Devlin Street, Top Ryde)
- Operations Centre reception (1 Constitution Road, Meadowbank)
Please bring along proof of that you live within the City of Ryde local government area (i.e. rates notice, drivers licence).
All sized fluorescent globes and tubes are accepted!
Australians consume between 50 and 60 million globes and tubes per year with less than 1% currently being recycled! Did you know that one fluorescent tube can pollute 30,000 litres of water?
Currently incandescent lights are being phased out and replaced with compact fluorescent lights. The latter utilises 20% of the energy to produce the same amount of light as the incandescent light globe and last four to ten times longer. Compact florescent lights however, contain a small amount of mercury that is an environmental hazard if not disposed of correctly.
What can be recycled? The hazardous materials are re-used as clean and environmentally safe products. The mercury is re-used for dental amalgams, the aluminium in cast products, the glass for home insulation and phosphor powder for fertilisers.
Fridge Buyback Program
The Fridge Buyback program has collected over 3,500 fridges, reducing greenhouse emissions by over 30,000 tonnes and saving $5 million in electricity bills thanks to the outstanding response from the community. Phase three of the Fridge Buyback program started in August 2008.
Please check the Fridge Buyback website or call 1800 708 401 to register to have your fridge picked up.
Residents that participate will receive up to $35.

Medical Waste - safe disposal of sharps and home dialysis materials
Fourteen pharmacies in the local council area cooperate with the City of Ryde to run a Medical Waste Collection Program.
Disposing of medical waste through domestic garbage creates a health and safety hazard for many people involved in waste management. Please consider their safety when deciding how to dispose of medical waste.
Residents can drop of syringes and dialysis material for free to any one of the participating pharmacies, where they are disposed of safely and correctly. Before delivering your syringes to the pharmacy ensure they are in a proper plastic sharps container, (available from either Diabetes Australia/MS Society or a needle and syringe exchange outlet), or are in a rigid plastic drink container with a screw top (milk bottle, coke bottle or juice bottle).

Medicines - Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM)
All residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) Program, to protect the City of Ryde's waterways, people and environment.
More than 66.3 million prescribed goods are purchased in NSW every year compromising 40% of the national consumption. NSW consumption is growing by nearly 10% each year with a majority of these prescribed goods stored past their use by date. Out of date prescribed goods can become a potential hazard for children and adults when "shared" amongst family members, or stored in an area accessible by children.
In Australia, 50 children are admitted to hospital every week as a result of poisoning; many cases involve consumption of medicines not intended for them. More than 200 tonnes of out of date and unwanted medicines are inappropriately disposed of (in household garbage and down toilets and sinks) across Australia.
These inappropriately disposed of medicines become a significant and serious contributor to environmental issues such as water quality and contaminated land.
What can you do with these items?
Return out of date and unwanted medicines to any pharmacy in Australia, where they are collected and disposed of at high temperatures and are in no way recycled.
Please visit the Return Unwanted Medicines website for more information.
Mobile Muster
Mobile Muster is the official national recycling program of the mobile phone industry in Australia. Initiated voluntarily by the telecommunications industry in 1999 its overall aim is to prevent mobile phones ending up in landfill.
The program collects and recycles mobile phone handsets, batteries and accessories from a network of over 1,400 mobile phone retailers, local council, government agencies and business drop off points across Australia.
What can be recycled:
- Over 90% of mobile phone materials can be recovered and used for new products
- Batteries include nickel to make stainless steel, cobalt and cadmium batteries
- Circuit boards include small amounts of gold and silver that is used in jewellery and other applications
- Handset housings and casings include plastics that are shredded and used to make fence posts and pallets
- Accessories include plastics and metals that are shredded, sorted and then used to make new plastic or metal products.
Drop old mobile phones and accessories to the Customer Service Centre on Devlin St or to any of the five libraries across the City of Ryde area.

The audits are an excellent opportunity to visually demonstrate to students the amount of waste and litter we all produce. It highlight ways in which we can all help to reduce it.
Free Worm Farm and Compost Bins for City of Ryde Schools!
City of Ryde recognises the importance in reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and hence is setting up and holding workshops for any school that requests the service.
Already hundreds of students have taken up the opportunity to learn about the amazing facts of worms.

Ryde Environmental Education Network
Ryde Public School's EcoGarden
Ryde Public School students are learning that not all fruit and vegetables come in tins, frozen packets or wrapped in excess plastic packaging from supermarket shelves.
With the assistance of the City of Ryde and continued support from the school and local community, a 6m x 3m eco-garden was constructed within the playground. The garden is used to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables including strawberries, corn, cane sugar, and lettuce to name a few.
Active worm farms and compost bins provide the eco-garden with mulch and soil.
The newly formed "Gardening Club" has over 100 volunteer students, and with supervising teachers they work on and maintain the garden.
Joanne Li of year 6 interviewed some of the students in the club:
" We like the garden because we can play in an environmentally fun place" "Because people learn not to litter" "I planted lettuce seeds - the ones that turned purple"
The ecogarden is integrated into teaching a number of other subjects including maths, English, HSIE, and sport.
Talks, Workshops and Demonstrations
City of Ryde Waste Department can provide your school, with a variety of free talks, interactive demonstrations and workshops on topics including:
- Recycling in Ryde
- Shopping for the future
- The wonderful world of worms
- Working with less waste - how to reduce waste in the workplace and save money
The programs can be modified to suit children from primary through to secondary and tertiary level and are also available for teachers to be undertaken as part of their in-service days.
