International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated around the world each year on 8 March. It is an important occasion to recognise the achievements and gains made by women and to focus on the job still to do in working towards equality for women around the world.
Originating back to the early 1900s when women garment makers in New York demonstrated to demand better working conditions, the cause spread first to England where women were meeting and marching to demand the right to vote. In 1928, women in Sydney rallied for equal pay for equal work, an eight hour day for shop works, no piece-work, a base wage for the unemployed and paid annual holidays.
Women in the City of Ryde are invited to come together, share and celebrate their achievements and contributions at two special events:
International Women's Day Morning Tea
Free morning tea to celebrate and acknowledge women's achievements and the work women do in the Ryde community.

International Women’s Day Sew-In
Celebrate International Women’s day by putting your sewing skills to use. You can help the SHARE Project keep girls at school in Kenya by making reusable sanitary pads. Donations of materials, time and skills welcome.
