Top Financial Rating for City of Ryde
          Friday, 29 May 2009

For the second year in a row, the City of Ryde’s financial management framework has received the top “Sustainable” rating from independent local government ratings agency, FiscalStar Services.

Acknowledging this strong endorsement, the Mayor, Clr Vic Tagg, said that FiscalStar had been quoted as saying the City of Ryde is rated one of the Top 5 of 42 metropolitan Councils for financial management.

“This independent recognition sends a strong message of confidence to the community that this Council has both the expertise and the ability to balance the budget effectively, while maintaining its long term vision for a sustainable future.

“It is good news indeed in these times of tough financial constraints,” he added.

The current Management Plan (2009/13) contains a four year $122 million Capital Works Program, with a record $36 million budgeted for 2009/10 (total expenditure is over $100 million).  The Capital Works allocation will provide ongoing improvement and maintenance to the City’s $2.6 billion worth of assets that includes roads, footpaths, parks, community buildings and other services.

Decisive action has also been taken to minimise the impact of the economic climate on ratepayers, to ensure they are not disadvantaged.  This includes holding down expenses, keeping residential rates at the lowest for comparable sized Councils in NSW, and no increases to over 55% of all Council’s fees and charges, and a total freeze on any increases on fees and charges for sporting clubs.
