Recycle Domestic Batteries And Reduce Toxins
         Wednesday, July 1 2009

Local residents can now safely recycle their unwanted domestic batteries and help prevent harmful toxins from leaching into the environment.

Household batteries, such as those used in cameras, torches, toys, appliances, gardening and garage tools, can now be deposited in the specially marked container in the Civic Centre foyer for safe recycling.

Mayor, Clr Vic Tagg, said the battery disposal program was a great addition to the City of Ryde’s recycling arsenal.  “Residents are already champions of recycling with latest figures showing that around 48% of household waste is now recycled.

“Many residents are aware that batteries can be recycled, but few people know where to drop them off.  This new collection point makes it easier for everyone.”

Domestic batteries contain many hazardous chemicals that can pollute the environment if disposed of in landfill. They also contain metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury that can be recovered and reused as secondary raw materials, so it makes good sense to recycle them.”

Battery Quick Facts

  • Australians currently discard 8,000 tonnes of used batteries each year
  • An estimated 94% of batteries end up in landfill
  • To minimise battery usage connect appliances to mains power and buy rechargeable batteries
  • Specially marked containers for Household Batteries along with containers for Mobile Phone, Printer Cartridges and Fluorescent Tubes/Globes are now located at the Civic Centre foyer (1 Devlin Street, Ryde)
  • Car batteries cannot be accepted as part of this program, but can be taken to the nearest waste transfer station.
