 Public Place Recycling

Public Park Recycling Stations | Butt Bins

City of Ryde (CoR) Council is one of the few Northern Sydney Region Councils that has Public Place Recycling. More than 260 waste and recycling bin stations were installed in CoR parks and sports field during 2007, in line with Council’s Management Plan.  Council is now taking Public Place Recycling to the next level by installing stainless steel waste and recycling bin stations in shopping centres and along streets to replace the old smaller street litter bins.

The new bin stations have a capacity more than twice that of the old bins, meaning less expected incidences of overflowing bins.  The new bin stations are also fitted with limiters designed to reduce contamination in the recycling bins and depositing of bulky, non-pedestrian waste in the waste bins.

Newspaper ads placed in the local papers assist residents in identifying the new bin stations, locations and what materials can be disposed in each bin.  It is important to note that the public place bin stations are not for the disposal of commercial or household waste.  Information pamphlets advising the correct use of the bin stations are also distributed to local shopkeepers, residents and are available at Council Customer Service and Libraries.

Cigarette ‘butt bins’ have been built into the waste and recycling bin stations to prevent cigarette but litter. It is important for bin station users to extinguish their cigarettes completely to prevent fires in the bins from occurring.

The first of the new public place waste and recycling bin stations were installed in Eastwood during May/June 2009. Although the bins were only recently installed, large percentages of recyclable materials are already being appropriately deposited into the recycling bin diverting waste from landfill.  Formal audits of deposited recycling will be periodically conducted to obtain public place recycling data.

More public place waste and recycling bin stations will be installed throughout CoR over the next 12 months which will increase the capture of recyclable material and therefore reduce how much waste goes to landfill.

Public Park Recycling Stations

The City Of Ryde has many beautiful parks and sporting ields for all to enjoy. In order to increase the amenity of our public space, City of Ryde Council is installing 262  garbage and recycling stations across 83 parks and sporting fields.

The distinctive signs on these stations show what can be placed in the yellow-lid recycling bins. This includes glass, plastic, steel and aluminium containers. You can also recycle paper and cardboard. This is the same system as your residential recycling service. All other general garbage is to go into the red-lid garbage bins.

The first 50 have been installed in the garbage and recycling stations following parks:

  • Meadowbank Park
  • Parry Park
  • Kissing Point Park
  • Bennelong Park
  • Morrison Bay Park
  • Olympic Park
  • Settlers Park
  • Peel Park

There has been an enthusiastic reaction from residents and local sporting groups with our contractors commenting on the high volume and quality of recyclables being collected so far. Over the coming two months most of our open spaces will have the new recycling stations including our larger parks:

  • Banjo Patterson Park
  • Helene Park
  • Gannan Park
  • Monash Park
  • Brush Farm Park
  • Eastwood Park
  • Glen Reserve
  • Fontenoy Park
  • Jim Walsh Park
  • Magdala Park
  • North Ryde Park
  • Santa Rosa Park
  • Tuckwell ParkButt Bins
  • Wilga Park
  • Christie Park
  • Dunbar Park
  • ELS Hall Park

Public place recycling is a major step toward achieving greater diversion of waste from landfill. So next time you are enjoying the beautiful surrounds of our parks and sporting fields, remember to act responsibly and place your recycling in the correct bin.

Butt Out Cigarette Bins

Council has installed 42 new, stainless steel “Butt Out” cigarette bins in high use locations around the City. The “Butt Out” cigarette bins are designed to deter smokers from littering and minimise the number of butts that are disposed off on ground and in gutters. The bins will be serviced and cleaned regularly. Sites where “Butt Out” cigarette bins are located include Council Buildings, Bus Stops and Train Stations.

To maximise the effectiveness of these The “Butt Out” cigarette bins, it is essential that smokers completely extinguish their cigarette butts to eliminate the possibility of a fire in the Butt Out bins.
