Council Gets With The Festive Spirit

Thursday, 6 August 2009

Council has pledged $50,000 for promotional banners and lights to improve the appeal of town centres in the lead up to Christmas.

The Mayor, Clr Vic Tagg, endorsed the initiative.  “Colourful, attractive shopping precincts attract visitors and shoppers and help to boost local business, especially during the festive season.  With the economic crisis still biting hard, we need to do everything we can to reinvigorate local business.

“Banner promotions are also a great way of letting people know about special community events.

“The banners have a five year life cycle, so it is a very cost effective way of creating a lively, social atmosphere.”

With the introduction of more Smartpoles as part of the utility undergrounding across the city, approximately 120 new promotional banners will be placed in and around the town centres of West Ryde, Gladesville, Top Ryde, Meadowbank and Macquarie Park in the lead up to Christmas.  The highly visible Civic Centre will also get new Christmas lights as part of the festive makeover.

Local Chambers of Commerce and business enterprises will be invited to contribute to the cost of decorations to brighten up town centres across the City during the festive season.
