Ryde Riverwalk Gets Heart Foundation Tick of Approval

Thursday, 6 August 2009

The popular Ryde Riverwalk, the 8km long landscaped pathway created along the Parramatta River, that links parks, trails, heritage sites and transport hubs, has won the prestigious Heart Foundation Local Government Award for the City of Ryde Council.

The Award is in recognition of Council’s efforts in tackling heart disease and commitment to making the local community a healthier place to live and work.   As the Active Living Category Winner in NSW, the City of Ryde is eligible to be selected as a National Category Winner or even the National Overall Winner - announced in October.

Mayor, Clr Vic Tagg, praised the vision of Councillors and staff in devising and executing the multi-faceted project.

“One of the defining aspects of the success of the Ryde Riverwalk project is the extensive community consultation undertaken by staff in the planning stage, and this work was commented on by the judges of the Awards.

“People value the Ryde Riverwalk for many different reasons – you can walk, cycle, picnic, access sports and transport hubs.  There are spots for quiet contemplation, recreational fishing, heritage and art enjoyment, weddings, scenic viewing and community events.

“This is a public space that creates a real sense of community and identity.  One that people come back to again, and again.”

The Ryde Riverwalk runs along the northern side of Parramatta River from Punt Road, Gladesville in the east, to Wharf Road, Melrose Park in the west.  It is a mixed-use pathway that allows for pedestrian and cycle access with numerous meeting and resting areas.  The Ryde Riverwalks, with over 10 kms of trails, provides access to a network of sporting and leisure parks, playgrounds, cycle and walk ways, public transport hubs, scenic views, heritage and special locations, public art and natural environments.   For details go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ryderiverwalk
