Mayoral Election 2009: Clr Michael Butterworth Elected Mayor,  Clr Roy Maggio Elected Deputy Mayor

Wednesday, 9 September 2009

At a full meeting of Council last night, Councillor Michael Butterworth was elected as Mayor of the City of Ryde and Councillor Roy Maggio was elected as Deputy Mayor for a 12 month term.

On his election, Clr Butterworth thanked his fellow Councillors for their support.   “It is an honour to accept the role of Mayor of the City of Ryde.

“As the new Mayor of the City of Ryde, I believe it is possible for our Council to pursue a progressive social agenda that enhances community services, in particularly our libraries, health and aged care, youth programs, public safety and access.

“I am also delighted to see the enthusiastic response of the community to the Ryde 2030 project – our strategic blueprint for the next 20 years.  As we move into the next phase of this project, where your priorities will be refined and developed into strategies, it is clear that you see this Council’s greatest achievements are our parks and open spaces, our community facilities and the revitalisation of our local shopping centres.

“Our focus will be to maintain this commitment to improving the cleanliness and general amenities of our extensive community public facilities and assets.”

The Mayor welcomed Clr Maggio to the office of Deputy Mayor.  “I look forward to working effectively with all Councillors.  Our undertaking is to work as a cohesive team on behalf of the
community and to move towards creating a dynamic, liveable and sustainable city.”

Councillor Maggio said he was honoured to be elected Deputy Mayor:  “I look forward to working closely with the Mayor and my colleagues in taking the City of Ryde towards our goals.

“I will work hard to ensure that the City of Ryde continues its commitment to children and family services and facilities.

“I support the development of a robust sporting culture with wide ranging amenities and opportunity for families, youth and sports clubs to enjoy.

“We will listen to the people and work on their benefit to provide good amenities and services and to identify new projects to showcase the City of Ryde as the great city it is.”
