Macquarie Park Floodplain Risk Management Committee

Functions of the Committee

Council has resolved to establish a Floodplain Risk Management Committee to assist in the preparation of a Floodplain Risk Management Plan for the Macquarie Park area.

The focus of the study area will be the Mars Creek, Industrial Creek, Shrimptons Creek, Porters Creek and Lane Cove catchments.

The purpose of establishing the Committee is to oversee and guide the preparation of the Macquarie Park Floodplain Risk Management Plan. The final Plan will provide Council with a sustainable, integrated set of floodplain management measures to reduce the risk of flooding to the community.

Why is the Plan being prepared?

The NSW Governments Flood Prone Land Policy aims to reduce the impacts of flooding and flood liability on individual landowners and occupiers, and to reduce private and public losses resulting from flooding.

The Policy encourages the development of:

  • Solutions to existing flood problems in developed areas and
  • Strategies for ensuring that new development is compatible with the flood hazard and does not create additional flooding problems in existing developed areas.

Under the Policy, local government has responsibility for managing flood liable land. The City of Ryde, with the assistance of the Floodplain Risk Management Committee, is responsible for this task in the Macquarie Park
area.
