Lane Cove Tunnel Project Background
The Lane Cove Tunnel development was proposed by the Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) and is being constructed by Thiess -
John Holland joint venture. The tunnel is expected to be open in December 2006. The 3.6 km tunnel will connect the Gore Hill
Freeway with the M2 Motorway. Once in operation, the tunnel is expected to result in quicker journey times between the City
and the north-western suburbs. The RTA has also flagged pedestrian improvements, shorter bus travel times, a new cycle-way
and reduction in surface traffic along adjacent sections of Epping Road. More general information is available

Air Quality Community Consultative Committee
One of the conditions imposed on the development by the Minister for Planning was the formation of an Air Quality Community
Consultative Committee (AQCCC). The AQCCC provides a forum for the RTA, the construction project team and members of the
community and local government to discuss air quality issues associated with the construction and operation of the tunnel. A
City Of Ryde representative regularly attends these meetings. Comments may be tabled at the committee meetings via the
attending representatives. The AQCCC meet monthly and meeting minutes are available at ‘www.lanecovetunnel.com.au’ under
Community Committees & Groups.
External Air Quality Monitoring
Seven air quality monitoring stations have been established in the vicinity of the tunnel alignment. The tunnel exits near the
eastern boundary of the Ryde Municipality, and Council therefore insisted that a monitoring station be established nearby at
Magdala Park as a check on air pollutant levels in the area. Parameters measured include particulate dust, carbon monoxide
and nitrogen oxides. Measurement commenced in 2005 in order to establish ‘background’ pollutant levels prior to the tunnel
opening. The data obtained is verified by a third party auditor.
Availability of Air Quality Monitoring Information
Monitoring information is available at the motorway operator’s website: ‘www.connectormotorways.com.au’. Once the tunnel is
in operation, the operator will be required to publish hourly real-time air quality monitoring results on its website. The website is
to have a user interface which allows selection of data periods of interest and presentation of the data in tabular and graphical
form. As of August 2006, monthly summary reports of the ‘pre-opening’ air quality data have been made available for public
download.
Council’s Position on Stack Filtration
At the Meeting of the Council of the City of Ryde, held on Tuesday 8 July 2003, Council resolved “that the RTA be called upon to
provide pollution control systems on the emission stacks for the Lane Cove Road Tunnel”. Whilst the design of the tunnel allows
for retrofitting of filtration devices, to date the RTA have not agreed to install a filtration system.
