   Eastwood
Canal Waste Wise Project

With assistance from the New South Wales government’s ‘Our Environment – It’s a Living Thing’ program,
City of Ryde created and implemented the Eastwood Canal Waste Wise Project.

In 2006 and 2007 City of Ryde targeted over 85 local food businesses and over 1000 residents in the Eastwood community in
building awareness of waste management practices of Chinese and Korean food retailers and local residents to reduce
stormwater pollution entering the Eastwood Canal.

Four action learning meetings were conducted with key local business and community stakeholders, magnets for residents
and business kits for food shops were produced and distributed and important on-going networks were formed. Working with
these community members has provided Council staff with a greater insight into how to engage with the local community and
this will greatly assist in future environmental projects in the Ryde area.

Please explore the resources developed from the project and the projects final report to find interesting learning outcomes and
valuable environmental education information on the project and stormwater protection.

For more information on the program, contact Council’s Sustainability Officer, Sarah Kinsela, 9952 8247.
