The Land and Environment Court has upheld a Council order requiring the closure of an illegal boarding house in Anzac Parade, West Ryde. The Court also ordered that certain illegal building works be demolished.
The boarding house was being conducted from an existing large family home in a low density residential zone, and had been illegally modified to accommodate numerous students.
City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Vic Tagg said: "This is a significant victory for the Council.
"Illegal businesses like this impact on neighbours and on local amenities by way of noise, traffic and waste generation."
"At the same time, unauthorised building modifications also pose a serious fire safety risk to occupants."
Council is currently investigating a number of other illegal boarding houses within the City which are very similar to the property in Anzac Avenue.
Should you have any concerns that a property is being unlawfully used as a boarding house, you are strongly encouraged to contact the City of Ryde on 9952 8222.
A copy of the Court’s judgement is expected to be available over the next few weeks at http://www.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/lec.
