Top Ten Ranking for Fridge Buyback
          Wednesday, 4 March 2009

Thanks to an outstanding response from the community, residents in the City of Ryde Council area have handed in 362 fridges, reducing greenhouse emissions by 3,107 tonnes and saving $502,000 in electricity bills.  This effort ranks the City of Ryde 9th out of the 38 NSW councils taking part in the scheme.

The Mayor, Clr Vic Tagg, praised the community’s efforts:  “It is estimated that there are nearly 8,300 eligible fridges in the Ryde area, so whist we are off to a great start, I strongly encourage residents with a second working fridge that they no longer need to contact Fridge Buyback to arrange for their fridge to be collected.”

Call Fridge Buyback on 1800 708 401 during business hours or visit Fridge Buyback’s website at www.fridgebuyback.com.au to arrange for your fridge to be collected.

Participating households will save an average $190 a year in electricity bills and 8 tonnes of greenhouse gases, as older fridges use up to three times as much energy as new fridges.  Eligible fridges must be the second fridge in the house and they must be switched on and working. They must be 250 litres or more in size and 10 or more years old.

Experienced removalists will collect your fridge free of charge from your home if removal involves 20 stairs or less.  Fridge Buyback will also pay you a $35 rebate if removal involves six stairs or less. If removal involves 21 or more stairs, a fee will apply.
Supported by the NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund, the Fridge Buyback program aims to collect, de-gas and recycle more than 19,000 working second fridges from metropolitan Sydney over the next three years. This will save more than $24 million in electricity costs and save 150 000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
