The community will develop a long term vision for the Ryde Local Government Area and identify ways we can work together to achieve this vision.
Council will lead this initiative for the area but it does rely on other partners, such as State and Federal Government agencies, community groups and residents and visitors, to develop and implement a realistic plan for the future.
What is a Community Strategic Plan?
Ryde 2030 Community Strategic Plan will be the overarching visionary plan for the Ryde Local Government Area. This can be used by government and community organisations to plan for the services and programs to meet the needs of the Ryde community.
Developing a community strategic plan needs to consider the complex issues facing local councils and their communities, and that managing those issues needs to be done in a flexible, creative and imaginative way. The first step in this process is to engage local residents and the wider community in a meaningful way on the future of its community.
A Community Strategic Plan can provide the framework for building community relationships by bringing people together to discuss shared issues, concerns and ideas and assist to build strong and cohesive communities by providing them the opportunity to have input into the key decisions for the long term planning for the places they live in.
It can also help those who participate in the process to better understand and resolve some of the issues around competing priorities for services and programs.
When will it happen?
The Ryde 2030 Community Strategic Plan will be developed between April 2009 and July 2010.
From April 2009 to July 2010 Council will be consulting residents, visitors, businesses, government and other agencies to develop the vision. During this time there will be many opportunities for you to get involved, have your say or find out more.
It is planned that the final document outlining the vision and strategies to achieve that vision will be developed by July 2010.
Why is it happening?
There are many reasons why Council is leading this process of developing a Plan for the Ryde Local Government Area, including:
- It is better practice
- It is anticipated that soon it will become a statutory requirement for all councils. See the Department of Local Government website for more info
- It will provide a clear direction for all tiers of government and services operating in the Ryde Local Government Area
- It will clearly document the direction for the area and identify how this direction will be achieved.
Where will it happen?
The Ryde 2030 Community Strategic Plan targets the Ryde LGA. Although this area is bounded by other areas and decisions by other councils, State and Federal Government does impact the Ryde Local Government Area, therefore these issues must be considered in planning for our future.
How will it happen?
The development of the vision and strategies for the area in 2030 will be developed through a lot of engagement with local residents, business, agencies and organisations delivering services and all tiers of government. This means engaging across the community, tapping into every community and inviting and fostering interaction for groups and for individuals, many of whom may not have been approached or felt motivated to be involved.
Council has also established four Theme Committees and an Expert Advisory Panel who will assist in analysing the feedback provided, identify ways the vision can be achieved and test the feasibility of the vision.
How will it be implemented?
The Ryde 2030 Community Strategic Plan will include an implementation plan which will identify who is responsible for each strategy to address the vision. Strategies will be the responsibility of many, Council, State and Federal Government and community organisations working in the area. The review of the implementation plan will be facilitated by Council.
Strategies identified in the Plan will form the basis of planning for many organisations. In the case of Council, the Community Strategic Plan will be the basis for the development of a four year operational plan (what is currently known as our management plan) which will guide the initiatives, programs and services Council will undertake to deliver on this vision in the long term.
