 RETURN UNWANTED MEDICINES (RUM)

Image of a medicine capsuleAll residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the RETURN UNWANTED MEDICINES (RUM) PROGRAM, to protect the City of Ryde's waterways, people and environment.

More than 66.3 million prescribed goods are purchased in NSW every year compromising 40% of the national consumption.

NSW consumption is growing by nearly 10% each year with a majority of these prescribed goods stored past their use by date.

Out of date prescribed goods can become a potential hazard for children and adults when "shared" amongst family members, or stored in an area accessible by children.

In Australia, 50 children are admitted to hospital every week as a result of poisoning; many cases involve consumption of medicines not intended for them.

More than 200 tonnes of out of date and unwanted medicines are inappropriately disposed of (in household garbage and down toilets and sinks) across Australia.

These inappropriately disposed of medicines become a significant and serious contributor to environmental issues such as water quality and contaminated land.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH THESE ITEMS?
Return out of date and unwanted medicines to any pharmacy in Australia, where they are collected and disposed of at high temperatures and are in no way recycled.

Please visit the Return Unwanted Medicines website for more information.

RYDE PUBLIC SCHOOL'S ECOGARDEN
Ryde Public School students are learning that not all fruit and vegetables come in tins, frozen packets or wrapped in excess plastic packaging from supermarket shelves.

With the assistance of the City of Ryde and continued support from the school and local community, a 6m x 3m eco-garden was constructed within the playground. The garden is used to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables including strawberries, corn, cane sugar, and lettuce to name a few.

Active worm farms and compost bins provide the eco-garden with mulch and soil.

The newly formed "Gardening Club" has over 100 volunteer students, and with supervising teachers they work on and maintain the garden.

Joanne Li of year 6 interviewed some of the students in the club:
" We like the garden because we can play in an environmentally fun place"
"Because people learn not to litter"
"I planted lettuce seeds - the ones that turned purple"

The ecogarden is integrated into teaching a number of other subjects including maths, English, HSIE, and sport.

WORKSHOPS, TALKS AND DEMONSTRATIONS FOR EVERYONE

City of Ryde Waste Department provides individuals and community groups with a variety of talks, interactive demonstrations and workshops on topics including (but not limited to):

  • Living Sustainably
  • Worm farming (see below)
  • Composting (see below)
  • Green Cleaning

Please contact the Waste Education Officer for more information on 02 9952 6287.

WORM FARMING AND COMPOSTING DEMONSTRATIONS
Photo of a compost bin and a worm farmWhen food and garden waste is sent to landfill, the organic nutrients become a contributor to environmental problems including water pollution and the greenhouse effect.

As around 50% of household waste produced is food and garden waste, composting and worm farming are excellent ways to turn these valuable organic nutrients into solid and liquid fertilisers.

City of Ryde conducts demonstrations and regular workshops on composting and worm farming. Worm farms are $50 and compost bins $25 (pictured). FREE home delivery is available. All worm farms and compost bins purchased are entitled to a free home set up and ongoing advice for the life of their farm/bin. Please contact the City of Ryde's Waste Education Officer on 02 9952 8222 for further information.
