Air Handling & Water Systems

Certain air-handling and water systems of buildings are regulated under the Public Health Act 1991.
These systems include:

  • Mechanical ventilation systems
  • Evaporative air coolers
  • Warm-water systems
  • Hot water systems
  • Humidifying systems
  • Water-cooling systems (cooling towers).

Systems regulated under the Act are required to be installed, operated and maintained in accordance with prescribed requirements to control microbial growth and prevent the spread of Legionnaires’ disease.
The prescribed installation, operating and maintenance requirements are set out in the Public Health (Microbial Control) Regulation 2000
In addition, all water-cooling systems and warm-water systems are required to be registered with Council to facilitate a rapid response to any Legionnaires’ disease outbreak.
To register a water-cooling or warm-water system complete and submit a Regulated System Registration(PDF, 43KB) form.
Additional information can be obtained from the NSW Code of Practice for the Control of Legionnaires’ Disease.
