Join our free Shop Shapers Program to get expert, in-depth advice, information and a $500 grant to give your business a boost.

Shop Shapers is a program that is being offered by the City of Ryde to support local businesses.

The Shop shapers project is designed to encourage ground-level, street facing businesses to enhance their street appeal, foster social interaction and stimulate economic activity. It provides targeted support for business owners to be up skilled in business planning, operations, marketing, and physical improvements to their shop fronts.

The Shop Shapers project specifically aims to:

  • Improve shopfronts in a targeted area;
  • Support businesses to be sustainable through educational support and information sessions;
  • Provide an opportunity to establish positive and valuable relationship between businesses and Council.

It is expected that the project will achieve a refreshed street experience for the local community and visitors whilst empowering business owners to start/continue to improve their business and build a sense of pride as well as increasing the economic activity in the centre.

In 2018, the Shop Shapers will be offered to businesses in the West Ryde Town Centre.

Registrations close on Monday, 26 March 2018.

STAGE 1 | Educational Workshops

Businesses in West Ryde are invited to attend a series of three workshops over a six week period. The workshops are offered free of charge. The workshops will provide opportunities for education, up skilling, as well as encouraging businesses to network for collaborative marketing efforts in the future.
In 2018, workshops will be held at West Ryde Community Hall (Anthony Rd, West Ryde). Participating businesses must attend all three workshops to be eligible to progress to Stage 2 of the program.

The schedule of workshops for 2018 is:

  • 26 March 2018, 6.30 pm - 8 pm - Visual Merchandising
  • 9 April 2018, 6.30 pm - 8 pm - Digital Marketing
  • 23 April 2018, 6.30 pm - 8 pm - Retail Tenancy Relationship Management

STAGE 2 | Personal Business Consultation

To be eligible to move through to stage two of the Shop Shapers program, participants must have attended (or had a representative attend) all three educational workshops. They must also be located in the targeted area and have a ground-level, street-facing shop.

In 2018, between May and July, an expert business consultant will contact each participating business to arrange a consultation. Consultations will take place at the business premises and at a time that is suitable for both the business owner and the business consultant. It is anticipated that the consultation session will last between 1-2 hours.

The consultant will discuss opportunities specific to the business and in the context of the town centre, whilst providing an opportunity for the business owner to apply and test knowledge gained through the educational workshops. It is hoped that these consultations will provide the business owner with a plan for potential improvements that could be achieved in stage three of the project.

STAGE 3 | Shopfront improvements

A period of time will be allocated to allow businesses to implement improvements identified in Stage two of the program.

Businesses are responsible for completing the shopfront improvements.

In 2018, Council will contribute $500 to each participant to improve their shopfront. Improvements must be completed between July and August 2018.

After improvements have been completed, the business consultant will return to the business to assess improvements. This is also an opportunity for the consultant to provide feedback to the business owner and follow up on any discussions during the initial one on one session.

STAGE 4 | Review and Celebration

Each Shop Shapers participant will receive two free tickets valued at $240 to attend the 2018 Northern Districts Local Business Awards Gala presentation

A business consultant will evaluate all participants and select a winner, which will be announced at the 2018 Northern Districts Local Business Awards.
