What is community development?
Community Development is “a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems.” – The United Nations.
Based on the principle that communities have the experience, knowledge and expertise that can be used to achieve social, cultural, economic and environmental goals, it can range from small initiatives that address a small group in the community to large initiatives that involve a broad range of participants.
Community Development requires people working together empowered by the decisions that affect everyday lives to bring about positive change and can include community groups, community organisations, local and state governments, and private enterprise.
Our community development approach
Our approach to community development includes:
- Working with community groups and organisations to build their ability to meet their aims
- Supporting community and sector advocacy for the wellbeing of their members
- Securing training opportunities to increase skills and expertise
- Developing and sharing resources for communities and organisations
- Encouraging the development of collaborative partnerships with business and government for positive social change in Ryde.
What is Council doing about community development?
Council has brought together a wide range of individuals, groups, community organisations and agencies to deliver projects, programs, events and activities that empower our community to shape solutions for common, everyday problems.
We are actively providing the space for people to share information and resources, and providing a strategic and collaborate approach to projects, training, community events and campaigns.

Information will be posted closer to event dates.
We were delighted to see many from our community attend Freedom Stories (21 June 2017 at Ryde Library), an event in celebration of Refugee Week 2017 where former and new refugees shared their experiences and cultures through short films, spoken words, music and food. Special thanks to our presenter Mahboba Rawi, our community partners including the Community Migrant Resource Centre, Ryde Intercultural Network and Settlement Services International, and everyone who attended the event - you all made the evening a complete success. Some photos from the night are available below for your viewing.
