Shop Ryder Service to cease
Published on 26 August 2025
City of Ryde Council has made the decision to discontinue the Shop Ryder bus service from 20 December 2025.
The service has become increasingly challenging to deliver due to increasing operating costs and legislative constraints and liabilities imposed by the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).
The service was introduced in 2008 as the Top Ryder, to support customer visits to the Top Ryde Shopping Centre and to provide a more sustainable transport option.
At its 22 July 2025 meeting where Council resolved to take this step, Council noted that Shop Ryder would almost entirely duplicate existing public transport service routes if further modifications were introduced to comply with HVNL.
Council also noted there is already a high degree of overlap with existing Transport for NSW public transport services, and that the provision of a public transport service such as this is not a core function of local government.
Alternative transport services
There are a range of public transport and alternative on-demand rideshare options the community can utilise, including:
- Stryder Community Transport – Stryder provides accessible transport to people living in the community who have specific transport needs related to their age, frailty, location, or disability, which could involve trips to medical appointments, everyday transport, social day trips and shopping services. Visit the Stryder website for more information.
- Uber WAV - Uber WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle), is a ride option offered by Uber that provides rides in vehicles equipped with ramps or lifts to accommodate riders using wheelchairs. Visit the Uber WAV website for more information.
- Taxi service - There is also a subsidised taxi service for eligible people with disabilities and Opal concessional fares for eligible residents over 60 years of age. Visit the Transport for NSW website for more information.
- Bus and train services - The map below provides information about public transport routes in the local area.

Council will continue to communicate the change to the community over the next few months during the phase out of the Shop Ryder service.
