Guided Walk: Putney River Walk

Starting in Putney Park and as the walk meanders westward along the banks of the Parramatta River, learn about natural features, local history and indigenous connection to place along this picturesque section of the Parramatta River.

You will learn about the early settlers to the area, grand houses of former years and the friendship of Bennelong and James Squire.

Hear about the trials, tribulations and triumphs the local shipbuilding trades experienced on the river over the years, including ‘Gretel’ Australia’s first America’s Cup challenger, other Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race champions, the WWII war craft building effort and the burning of the sister ships – the ‘Braeside’ and the ‘Burnside’.

Discover how Putney has successfully transformed itself over the past century from an area once known as “Struggletown” to the suburb it is today.
