Kamahl is an accomplished bass baritone singer who has become a household name for his interpretations of love songs and ballads on record, in concert and via his regular television appearances.

Born in Malaysia, he moved with his parents to Adelaide in 1953 where he completed his schooling and even though he faced opposition due to his race, with the help of Rupert Murdoch, was able to continue building his music career.

Over his career, Kamahl has performed at the Sydney Opera House, given a Royal Command performance before Queen Elizabeth II at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and became a hit in Europe due to his spectacular hit ‘The Elephant Song.’

He has now recorded over 30 albums, which contain many number-one hits and was also made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1994 for his philanthropic efforts. He was Australian Father of the Year in 1998 and was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal by the Queen in 2004.

City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM said, “We are so privileged to welcome legendary singer Kamahl as our Australia Day Ambassador this year, and to have him along to so many Council events.”
