Help us to make the City of Ryde a better place for people with a disability to live, work and visit in the area by providing your comments on our draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

In 2014 the Disability Services Act 1993 was replaced by the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 (DIA). Under the new Act, Local Government Authorities are required to undertake Disability Inclusion Action planning (DIAP).

The DIAP is a commitment from Council that people with a disability are welcomed, accepted and respected in our community. This plan and the actions within it will be integrated annually into Council’s core business and into Council’s Delivery Program and Operational Plan over a four year period.

The City of Ryde, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove Councils have collaborated in the development of a regional Disability Inclusion Action Plan.  This regional approach has provided the opportunities for the three Councils to learn from each other and assess their strengths and weaknesses.

As part of the process of developing the draft  DIAP, consultations occurred throughout the months of March to May 2017. These consultations included community and staff surveys, community focus groups, service provider roundtable discussions and a series of internal workshops with staff from across the organisation.

The strategies in the DIAP are translated into local actions for each Council under 4 key areas:

  1. Positive community attitudes and behaviours – staff training and development, publications and communication, community campaigns.
  2. Liveable communities – access to physical environment, universal housing design, community recreation, Council policies and social engagement.
  3. Supporting access to meaningful employment - workforce diversity and inclusion, flexible working arrangements, welcoming work culture, recruitment processes.
  4. Accessible systems and processes – addressing the needs of people with a diverse range of disabilities.

We would like to hear from people living with disability, their families and carers, service providers and general community members regarding your thoughts on the draft DIAP.
