The City of Ryde is seeking feedback on the proposed relocation of the existing bus stop on Taylor Avenue, Melrose Park to allow for the installation of a bus shelter and to improve accessibility for those living with disability.

What are the proposed changes?

Council is proposing the following changes:

  • Relocation of the existing bus stop (Stop ID 211461) on the northern side of Taylor Avenue to in front of 96 Cobham Avenue.
  • Relocation of the existing bus zone located on the northern side of Taylor Avenue to in front of 96-98 Cobham Avenue.
  • Installation of a Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) compliant bus stop shelter in front of 96 Cobham Avenue.
  • Construction of a footpath and kerb ramp on Cobham Avenue, from Batten Avenue to the new bus shelter.
  • Replace the existing bus zone located on the northern side of Taylor Avenue to a No Stopping zone.

As a result of the proposed relocation, there is expected to be a loss of four (4) parking spaces. Further details for the new footpath, bus stop and bus zone will be subject to the final design.

Why are the changes being proposed?

Council is proposing to install a bus shelter in Cobham Avenue to replace the bus shelter on the northern side of Taylor Avenue which was removed as part of footpath upgrade work.

When installing or upgrading bus stops across the Local Government Area, Council ensures they are compliant with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT) under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA).

Council has assessed the suitability of installing a shelter at the existing bus stop, however DSAPT and DDA compliance is not possible at this location with a bus shelter. This is due to insufficient width of the footpath to allow wheelchair access when a shelter is installed at the existing location.

Therefore, a relocation of the bus stop is required in order for a bus shelter to be installed that meets the legislative requirements of DSAPT and DDA standards.
