ELS Hall Park Playground - Kid's Habitat Workshop + Nesting Box Making

Designed for 10-13 year olds by Sydney artist Jade Oakley, this fun and creative workshop aims to engage children in the concept of habitat. The workshop will include discussions on habitat and making and decorating a nesting box. Nesting boxes created will be integrated into the new playground to be built in the park.

Using art, science, storytelling and play, children will investigate:

  • What native animals live in our area?
  • What animals once lived here?
  • Can we identify any introduced species?
  • How does habitat relate to the built environment? (I.e. is habitat just the park or does it extend into our home gardens? Where dies Shrimptons Creek flow to?)
  • How can we help to enhance local habitat?

Workshop Running Order:

  • Talk and discussion on Habitat (30 minutes)

  • Nesting Box Making and Decoration (1.5 hours)

Please Note: this workshop has been designed for children aged 10-13yrs. It is recommended one parent accompanies their child.

Additional Activities:

  • Habitat inspired badge making will take place alongside workshop activities – this will be open to all workshop participants and the general public. Drawings created for badges will be documented and may be used by Jade Oakley in her artwork design for the new playground.

  • Workshop documentation (stills and video) will be undertaken by Delphinus Photography. If you do not wish to be filmed or photographed please advise staff on the day.
