Did you know that City of Ryde households create and throw out close to 200-300 extra tonnes of waste around Christmas and during the New Year?

Avoid creating extra waste by following these simple tips:

Consider sustainable gifts

We’ve all had the experience of being given something we don’t want, like or need. Minimise waste by buying sustainable gifts such as donations and experiences, or gifts made from recycled materials. Donate, sell or re-gift unwanted gifts. Got some unwanted toys? Why not donate them to the Toys for Joy program?

Consider what you are wrapping your gifts in. Metallic wrapping paper or paper with glitter or foil detail cannot be recycled in your yellow-lidded bin. If you receive Christmas gifts wrapped in these, pop them in your red-lidded bin. For a more sustainable option, perhaps you would like to try furoshiki which is the practice of wrapping gifts using reusable fabrics, tea towels or scarves.

Reduce food waste

During the festive season it is all too easy to buy too much of everything and end up with a lot of waste. Make a list before you leave home, so you only buy the things you need. Send your guests home with leftovers to reduce waste in the bin.

Storing food properly can also extend the life of your food and cut down on waste. For more tips, visit the Love Food Hate Waste website.

Minimise plastic and packaging

When buying gifts and other Christmas items, consider how much plastic and packaging you are using. Avoid using unnecessary plastic - opt for alternatives such as reusable or compostable options.

Recycle old toys

When your kids' toys are no longer in good condition to be re-gifted, it's time to recycle them. Old and broken toys of any brand can be recycled for free through the Big W Toys for Joy program. Toys are accepted at both Big W stores in Top Ryde City and Macquarie Centre. Find out more.
