Amplify: Oral Histories

Amplify is a unique interactive platform for the digital preservation of audio material where you can participate in capturing history and make Ryde’s history come alive.

As an exciting joint venture between the State Library of New South Wales and Ryde Library Service as well as other library institutions, the Amplify platform is home to online oral histories – many of which have been preserved digitally from their original format – paired with machine-generated transcripts. These transcripts can be edited by any user to improve their accuracy and ultimately enrich important historical and cultural documents.

Hear from some of Ryde’s local characters as they relay their memories of childhood, migration and employment. Learn about the trials and tribulations they faced during their lifetime, including living through wars and the Great Depression, as well as times of happiness and prosperity.

Discover how our places and communities have changed over time to become what they are today.
