Works that have been completed include the demolition of footpaths on the northern side of Constitution Road between See Street and Bowden Street and utility investigations (CCTV and potholing) have been undertaken throughout the Constitution Road corridor.
Upcoming Works

The following works as detailed below are currently in progress and are being actioned accordingly.
Following detailed investigations on site, the existing gas infrastructure between See Street and Bowden Street was found to be at a different level than originally anticipated. As a result, adjustments to the construction approach are required prior to progressing this stage of the project.
Once the necessary approvals are obtained, gas relocation works will commence and are expected to take several weeks to complete. These works are a critical precursor to the piling works planned for the same area.
To safely undertake these activities, the current traffic arrangements will need to remain in place during this period. Council understands the inconvenience this may cause and appreciates the community's patience while these essential works are completed.
Approved tree removal will also be undertaken over the coming weeks.
Additional signage installed

Following community feedback about recent traffic flow changes, City of Ryde is introducing additional measures to improve driver awareness and traffic flow as essential upgrade works continue on Constitution Road, Meadowbank The temporary traffic changes are expected to remain in place for approximately 12 months to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently.
Over the coming two weeks, Council will progressively install additional signage near the intersection, including:
- WRONG WAY signage at both Constitution Road approaches;
- Duplication of the NO RIGHT TURN and NO LEFT TURN signs at both Bowden Street approaches;
- ROAD CLOSED AHEAD signs at both Constitution Road approaches; and
- SIDE ROAD CLOSED signs at both Bowden Street approaches.

Upcoming Traffic Change
23 September 2026
This is to advise that, from 14 September, the following traffic changes and detours will be implemented for a period of approximately 12 months to facilitate roadworks along the Constitution Road corridor:
- Constitution Road from See Street to Bowden Street will become a single lane road supporting eastbound traffic. The eastbound traffic will then be generally detoured via Bowden Street, Thorn Street, Sutherland Avenue and Thistle Street.
- Similarly, Constitution Road from Hamilton Crescent to Bowden Street will become a single lane road supporting westbound traffic. The westbound traffic will then be generally detoured via Bowden Street, Bay Drive and Railway Road.
- Impacted buses routes will follow the abovementioned detours.
Construction related delays are expected during this period and motorists are encouraged to use Victoria Road and Church Street, where possible.

Eastbound traffic (red dashed route):
- Eastbound traffic travelling along Constitution Road is diverted north via Bowden Street.
- The detour continues east through local streets including Richard Johnson Crescent and Robert Street before reconnecting to Constitution Road near Belmore Street.
- A second eastbound detour route runs from Bowden Street south along Nancarrow Avenue and east through the surrounding road network before rejoining Constitution Road near Hamilton Crescent West.
Westbound traffic (yellow dashed route):
- Westbound traffic is diverted from Constitution Road via Bowden Street and Angas Street.
- The route continues through the Meadowbank Station area and Bank Street before returning north along Bowden Street and reconnecting with Constitution Road west of the work area.

Detour Route Description
Eastbound traffic:
- From Constitution Road, turn north into Bowden Street.
- Follow the signed detour through Robert Street and surrounding local roads.
- Rejoin Constitution Road near Belmore Street.
Westbound traffic:
- From Constitution Road, follow the signed detour via Angas Street and the Meadowbank Station area.
- Continue via Bank Street and Bowden Street.
- Rejoin Constitution Road west of the closure area.
What the Works Will Deliver
The upgrade will transform Constitution Road between Hamilton Crescent and Bank Street, Meadowbank, delivering a range of long-term benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors to the area.

These improvements support Council’s broader vision for a safe, accessible, and vibrant Meadowbank Town Centre, while balancing traffic efficiency with local amenity.
Construction Timing
Construction is expected to:
- Commence: June 2026 (subject to final pre-construction activities)
- Duration: Approximately 18 months
- Completion: Around December 2027
To minimise disruption, works will be delivered in stages. Community will be notified well in advance of the work starting on any part of the project. Traffic management plans will be in place to maintain access for residents, businesses, and emergency services wherever possible.

Funding and Investment
The Constitution Road Infrastructure Upgrade Project cost is estimated at $24 million, and funded through a combination of:
- Commonwealth Government grants
- NSW Government grants
- Developer contributions
- City of Ryde funding, including the Section 7.11 Roads and Traffic Management Reserve.
This coordinated funding approach enables Council to deliver major infrastructure improvements that support the continued growth and liveability of the Meadowbank precinct.
The Constitution Road Infrastructure Upgrade Project is proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Department of Planning - Accelerated Infrastructure Fund Round, Department of Regional Development - Infrastructure Betterment Fund (IBF), Commonwealth Regional Roads & Transport Recovery Package and Transport for NSW.

April 2026 - Construction Contractor Awarded
The City of Ryde is continuing to progress the Constitution Road Infrastructure Upgrade Project, a major investment to improve traffic capacity, road safety, pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, and the public domain within the Meadowbank precinct.
Following extensive community consultation, technical investigations and detailed design, Council has reached a significant milestone in delivering of the project.
At its meeting on 24 February 2026, Council approved the appointment of Mack Civil as the construction contractor for the Constitution Road Infrastructure Upgrade Project, following a competitive public tender process. This contract represents best value for money and ensures the works can be delivered by an experienced contractor with demonstrated capability in complex urban environments.
