Every year a committed and largely unseen army of volunteers give their time and skills to enhance and uplift the life of the community within the City of Ryde.

The annual Volunteer Recognition Awards aim to acknowledge the contribution made by these unsung heroes. 

2025 Volunteer Recognition Award Winners

The 2025 Volunteer Recognition Awards were held on Thursday 22 May and we are excited to announce our winners below.

Individual Volunteer of the Year | George Ganiatsas

With over 35 years in local football, George Ganiatsas has shaped generations through his volunteer service with Gladesville Ryde Magic Football Club, promoting sport, unity and youth development.

Young Volunteer of the Year | Emma Richard

Emma Richard has volunteered with numerous local organisations including Eastwood Junior Guides, Christ Church Gladesville and Ryde Hunters Hill Hockey Club. In her volunteering capacity, she offers mentorship and access to outdoor experiences, helping young girls grow in confidence and community spirit.

Volunteer Group of the Year | 4GreaterGood

Led by young changemakers Téa and Isla Costin, 4GreaterGood delivers practical support to individuals and families experiencing hardship. Their outreach includes food relief through their signature program 100 Meals in 100 Minutes, hygiene packs, and advocacy for those doing it tough.

Group Volunteer of the Year Nominees

4GreaterGood

Led by young changemakers Téa and Isla Costin, 4GreaterGood delivers practical support to individuals and families experiencing hardship. Their outreach includes food relief through their signature program 100 Meals in 100 Minutes, hygiene packs, and advocacy for those doing it tough.

Ample Abilities Inc. Volunteer Team

This volunteer team at the heart of Ample Abilities facilitate inclusive initiatives for people with disabilities, people with mental health issues, the elderly and their caregivers. Their efforts empower participants and promote greater understanding and accessibility in the community.

Armenian Brotherhood Evangelical Holy Trinity Church Committee

This volunteer committee provides pastoral care, mentorship, and support to the Ryde community. Their outreach spans elderly care, local transport, spiritual guidance, and daily messages of hope in both Armenian and English.

Avazan Inc.

Avazan Inc. is a collective of female musicians who volunteer their time to support mental health and wellbeing. Through music-led community events, they uplift people – particularly women, migrants and culturally and linguistically diverse groups – and inspire positive mental health conversations.

Captivateplay! (Captivate Presbyterian Church)

CaptivatePlay! volunteers run a weekly playgroup that offers young children and caregivers a safe, welcoming space to connect, learn, and grow. Their commitment nurtures early childhood development.

Differently Abled People Association (DAPA) Inc.

DAPA volunteers work tirelessly to foster inclusion and empowerment for people with disabilities. Their educational programs, advocacy, and community outreach create a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club (ECSCC) Inc.

For over 30 years, volunteers at the ECSCC have created a vibrant, caring community for Cantonese-speaking seniors through weekly programs, cultural events and tireless support. With over 1,500 members, their efforts have brought joy, connection and empowerment to generations.

Ermington Public School P&C

The Ermington Public School P&C works tirelessly to support students, families and teachers through fundraising, events and school improvements. Their volunteer spirit fosters a strong and inclusive school culture while championing health, wellbeing and environmental causes.

Giant Steps (Greenhouse Project)

This team worked alongside teachers and support workers to transform an unused space into a sensory garden for students with disabilities. Their hands-on support enhances learning, encourages independence and provides therapeutic outdoor experiences.

IWA (Indonesian Welfare Association) Senior Group

IWA Senior Group volunteers uplift the community by improving the quality of life for older adults. Since 2009, their events, social programs and practical support have fostered wellbeing and cultural connection.

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Ryde

Headquartered in Macquarie Park, Ryde NSW SES volunteers support the community through emergency response efforts. From storm damage to floods and rescues, they provide vital public safety services that keep our homes and streets safe.

Riding For The Disabled Ryde Centre (RDA Ryde)

RDA Ryde Centre provides therapeutic horse riding for people with disabilities 4 days per week. Run entirely by volunteers, this program enhances physical, social, and emotional wellbeing through joyful, inclusive experiences.

Young Volunteer of the Year Nominees

Giian Klapos volunteers with the TAFE NSW Adult Migrant English Program, helping new arrivals improve their English and confidence. Her tutoring supports smoother settlement and greater social inclusion.

Hunter Klowss

Hunter Klowss volunteers his tech skills to extend the life of old computers through software upgrades at Marsden High School. His innovative thinking has saved money and boosted access to technology for the broader school community.

Isla Costin

Isla Costin is a passionate youth volunteer with Kids Giving Back. In 2024, Isla co-founded 4GreaterGood, a youth-led charity that supports people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. Her consistent efforts have brought hope, friendship, and a sense of belonging to many in the Ryde community.

Téa Costin

Téa Costin supports families facing food insecurity, isolation, and financial hardship. In 2024, Téa co-founded 4GreaterGood, a youth-led charity that supports people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. Her efforts deliver both practical help and emotional care to vulnerable residents across Ryde.

Individual Volunteer of the Year Nominees

Arman Lepedjian

A founding member of the Ryde Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestra, Arman Lepedjian has helped bring orchestral music to the community, enriching Ryde’s cultural landscape for over a decade.

Beth Finis

Beth Finis is a cornerstone of the Ryde Women’s Hub. Her presence at the welcome table fosters a safe, inclusive space for women from all walks of life. She also volunteers as a committee member for the West Ryde Easter Celebrations.

Bijinder Dugal

Bijinder Dugal is a long-serving educator and community volunteer. In 2015, she co-founded the AASHA Foundation to offer dynamic and culturally appropriate programs to seniors with Indian backgrounds to keep them healthy, alert and socially active.

Brian Thompson

Brian revitalised the vegetable garden at St Charles Catholic Primary School, teaching students valuable life skills and strengthening their connection to nature and sustainability.

Carol Gulbin

Carol Gulbin has been a committed member of the City of Ryde Eisteddfod Committee for five years. Her tireless work – particularly through the challenges of COVID – has kept the arts thriving in the local community.

Christine Shoji

Christine Shoji volunteers as an Art Therapy Assistant at Twilight Aged Care, Glades Bay Gardens. Her creativity and compassion bring joy and comfort to residents through meaningful and engaging activities that foster self-expression.

David Ying Cheuk Ha

David Ha’s volunteer work has significantly enhanced the wellbeing of the Ryde community by promoting healthy and socially connected lifestyles. His dedication and consistent support make him a valuable and respected figure in local initiatives.

Diane McPhail

Diane McPhail is a devoted volunteer at Ryde Hospital, generously offering her time across multiple departments. Her kindness and commitment benefit countless patients and staff. She also volunteers in the Bush Regeneration program in the Blue Gum High Forest.

Dr. Anthony Ching

Anthony Ching has played a vital role in promoting traditional Chinese culture through Lion Dance Kids. As a mentor and advocate, he leads educational workshops and empowers young people to embrace cultural heritage.

Gay Walsh

Gay Walsh has volunteered at Twilight Aged Care, Glades Bay Gardens for three years. Her regular visits bring warmth, laughter, and a deep sense of community to the residents through music and games.

Ken Stammers has served with Stryder Community Transport since 2005, assisting vulnerable residents with transport. He is considerate, caring and always goes the extra mile. He also volunteers with Christ Church Gladesville In Numerous Roles.

Leo Driessen

Leo Driessen is a foundation member of the Rotary Club of Macquarie Park. Over the years, his leadership and commitment to community projects have made a profound impact, exemplifying the importance of lifelong volunteer service.

Malcolm Edey

Malcolm Edey volunteers with the Good Life Chorus, which provides music therapy and respite for seniors and people with early-stage dementia. His efforts support joy, wellbeing, and connection.

Maral Mari Kaloustian

Maral Mari Kaloustian has dedicated much of her life to the Armenian Relief Society. Her generosity, humility, and dedication have provided support and hope to countless individuals across the Ryde community.

Mark McGrath

Mark McGrath has volunteered with Neighbourhood Watch Ryde for over 15 years. His contributions keep the community informed and empowered around safety and crime prevention.

Mi Kyung Park

Mi Kyung Park volunteers with K Bongbong Community Centre, offering culturally inclusive programs for seniors. Her work supports wellbeing and belonging for older adults across Eastwood and Epping.

Michael So

Michael So is an active committee member of the Differently Abled People Association. His leadership and advocacy play a vital role in creating inclusive opportunities in the Ryde community.

Rochelle Keshishian

Rochelle Keshishian supports new parents through the Australian Breastfeeding Association, helping women gain confidence and overcome challenges in nurturing their children. She is also the Vice President of the RSL Swimming Club, helping organise training and competitions across NSW for over 300 young swimmers.

Rosemary Eliott

As the outgoing president of the Good Life Chorus, Rosemary Eliott led the choir through critical transition. Her leadership has restored joy and connection for seniors, carers, and individuals with dementia.

Sam Le Cornu

Sam Le Cornu has served as Treasurer of the Truscott Street Public School P&C for more than 12 years. Her dedication ensures strong governance and community support for local education.

Community Hero Nominees

Anita Shepherd

Anita Shepherd has been a dedicated volunteer at the World League for Protection of Animals (WLPA) for the past five years, contributing more hours than anyone else. She plays a key role in the direct care of cats and rabbits – feeding, cleaning, socialising, medicating, and supporting rehoming efforts. Known for her kindness, reliability, and excellent public engagement, she has also fostered and adopted animals, run small adoption events, and supported fundraising efforts. Despite limited personal resources, Anita consistently donates supplies and uplifts both animals and fellow volunteers through her generosity and warmth.

Talin Istefanian

Talin Istefanian has volunteered with the Armenian Relief Society for 23 years, dedicating 4-10 hours per week, including 16 years with the Araz Chapter. She has held key leadership roles such as Secretary, Treasurer, and Chairperson, and was twice elected to the Central ARS in similar capacities. Her commitment has been especially impactful during times of crisis, reflecting her deep dedication to the community. Talin’s long‑standing service and leadership continue to strengthen and support the ARS mission.
