The draft Sport and Recreation Strategy 2016-2026 (the draft Strategy) is on public exhibition for your comment.

The purpose of the draft Strategy is to provide a framework for the on-going effective provision, management and coordinated development of recreation facilities and services across the City of Ryde.

Understanding and planning for sport and recreation is essential in ensuring that the community have sufficient and equitable opportunities to live an active lifestyle. To achieve these opportunities, it is necessary to plan for changes in sporting and recreation needs strategically, and to build in flexibility and adaptability to the existing and future facilities.

The draft Strategy specifies seven goals and specific areas for strategic focus in the City of Ryde as it designs, plans and manages sport and recreation into the future.

The seven goals are:

  • Goal 1 - To Make the Most of What We Have
  • Goal 2 - Equitable Access for All
  • Goal 3 - We Understand and Respond to the Needs of Our Diverse Community
  • Goal 4 - Our Facilities are Fit For Purpose
  • Goal 5 - We Provide Inclusive and Accessible Sport and Recreation
  • Goal 6 - Our Community Will be Aware of Our Facilities and Programs
  • Goal 7 - Sustainable Management of Facilities and Sport

The goals were developed in response to the outcomes of community consultation and research into the sport and recreation industry. The consultation included surveys, focus groups, discussions with state sporting organisations and sport and recreation clubs within the local area.

In addition to consultation, the draft Strategy has been developed on the basis of a review of local and regional trends along with an investigation of community needs and expectations for sport and recreation within the City of Ryde. This draft Strategy is supported by an Implementation Plan (Section 10) that outlines projects and facilities to be delivered over the short, medium and long term.

The draft Synthetic Surface Action Plan (2016 - 2026) is included as a reference document.
