KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL
Council is proud to be unveiling a Korean War Memorial at Memorial Park, Meadowbank, on 27 July during our annual flag raising ceremony to recognise the armistice of that terrible conflict, which took place between June 1950 and July 1953.
Korea’s Gapyeong County has kindly donated an impressive and meaningful memorial stone recognising the 17,000 Australian servicemen who took part in the Korean War, with that number including close to 100 Ryde-born soldiers.
It’s a particularly meaningful commemoration of those Australian soldiers who took part in the famous Battle of Kapyong which is within Gapyeong County and widely regarded as one of the greatest displays of bravery by our troops in any armed conflict.
During the three-day battle in April 1951, heavily outnumbered Australian and Canadian troops managed to repel wave after wave of attacks, successfully halting an enemy advance on Seoul. The fierce fighting cost the lives of 32 Australians and left 52 wounded.
The ceremony, which begins at 3.00pm, is a fitting way to honour all of the courageous Australian and Korean servicemen who took part in the Korean War.
NATIONAL TREE DAY
The City of Ryde is an enthusiastic participant in National Tree Day, which takes place on 27 July.
As part of this year’s event, please join us as we help to improve a wildlife corridor along Shrimptons Creek at ELS Hall Park by planting native plants from 10.00am – 12.00pm.
You’ll be able to improve the local environment and watch over time as the plantings flourish into a haven for native wildlife.
I’m pleased to report that Council is adding more trees as part of our commitment to increase the canopy cover to 40 percent by 2030, with close to 6,000 trees and native plants given away or planted during 2024/25.
ROTARY CHANGEOVER
I want to congratulate all of our local Rotary Clubs for another year of impactful community service which was celebrated at recent changeover ceremonies.
I was honoured to attend the Changeover Dinners for the Ryde, North Ryde and Macquarie Park Rotary Clubs over the last two weeks.
These important ceremonies, marking the handover of leadership from the outgoing president to the incoming president, are a wonderful way of acknowledging the accomplishments and contributions of the outgoing board and club members during the past year.

Sincerely,
Trenton Brown – Mayor
