Mayor's Community Message
21 May
DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION
This Council is fully supportive of Domestic Violence and Family Prevention Month, which is taking place throughout May.
We are proud to be accredited as a White Ribbon Australia workplace and we recognise that ending violence against families and women requires action, awareness, and a united community effort.
The City of Ryde is committed to being part of the solution by fostering respect, providing support, and working tirelessly to create a future where everyone feels safe and valued.
Unfortunately, domestic and family violence is a scourge that affects people in all walks of life, in every socio-economic group, and in every town and city – including our own.
Council has a close working relationship with the Ryde Area Police Command, and I commend its enthusiastic participation in last week’s state-wide Operation Amarok targeting domestic violence offenders.
OUR UNSUNG HEROES
I am delighted and proud to be attending Council’s 2025 Volunteer Recognition Awards, being held at Curzon Hall on Thursday 22 May from 6.30 – 9.00pm.
There are 21 amazing citizens nominated in the individual volunteer category, five for young volunteer, and 12 for group volunteer. On top of that, there are 20 nominations for our Community Heroes.
The nominees come from a diverse range of backgrounds, providing the community with their free labour and resources and the City of Ryde salutes their strong work ethic and generous productivity.
These awards are a wonderful way to recognise the many unsung heroes in our community.
RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week is held from 27 May to 3 June 2025 and is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in this country.
This year’s theme is ‘Bridging Now to Next’, which reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. It calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
Council has a number of terrific and informative events planned to celebrate National Reconciliation Week, including a series of Aboriginal history talks and bushfood tastings, and guided walks of Brown’s Waterhole in Marsfield and the Glades Bay Riverwalk in Gladesville.
I hope that as many people as possible join these important celebrations honouring our Indigenous history and culture.
