Mayor's community Message

17 April

TG MILLNER UPDATE

Correspondence was tabled at last night’s City of Ryde Council meeting from the office of Planning Minister Paul Scully that contradicts the recent decision by Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig preventing City of Ryde from compulsorily acquiring the TG Millner Field site.

The letter to Council in relation to our desire to purchase the site, dated 11 March 2024, pledges that the NSW Government will continue to work with us, “on the provision of open space to support future growth in the City of Ryde local government area, particularly land that supports growth in proximity to Macquarie Park”.

It further states that: “We will continue to discuss funding and acquisition arrangements with you.” It appears the State Government is far from being in lockstep concerning the fate of TG Millner and as I said last week, we’re not giving up our fight to save this vital open space from becoming a housing development.

ST CHARLES PLAQUE

I was honoured to recently present St Charles Catholic Primary School with a plaque celebrating 165 years of education in the Ryde Local Government Area.

The plaque pays tribute to Charles Borromeo, a leading figure in the Catholic Church during the 16th Century who become known as the ‘loving reformer’. He was canonised in 1610 and the school is embedded within the parish of St Charles Borromeo.

It joins a previous City of Ryde plaque which was presented to the school in 2008 marking its 150th anniversary.

I hope that in 2058, whoever is Mayor will be able to provide another plaque to this wonderful school marking 200 years of exceptional education.

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

I will be attending two very important commemoration services for the Armenian Genocide of 1915 this week.

Tonight, I will be representing the City of Ryde at the National Armenian Genocide Commemoration Evening at Chatswood Concourse. Then, on Saturday 27 April, I will be at Meadowbank Memorial Park for Council’s own annual commemoration service.

This City has the highest number of residents with Armenian heritage in Australia, with households across our LGA making up close to 17 percent of the nation’s Armenian speaking population. Many of those residents have relatives or friends who were either directly or indirectly impacted by the genocide, which resulted in the brutal deaths of an estimated 1.5 million people.

I invite the community to join me for this important and solemn occasion at 2.30pm.

Yours Sincerely,

Clr Brown - Mayor
