Flying Foxes

Fruit bat hanging upside down from a tree

Flying foxes or ‘fruit bats’ feed on fruit, nectar and pollen. They are important pollinators in our ecosystem and can carry seeds for several kilometres every night. These seeds help to establish new plants and maintain biodiversity.  Flying foxes are protected native fauna that are vulnerable to extinction and must not be harmed.

Sometimes, flying foxes can eat the fruit from your trees. If you do not wish them to do this, trees may be covered with netting to stop the bats from reaching the fruit. However, care must be taken to ensure that the netting will not entangle wildlife.  This can be done by ensuring the netting is clearly visible (white), rigid and has a gap size of less than 5mm.
