Digging up Ryde: discover dinosaurs at City of Ryde Libraries
In this immersive workshop, young palaeontologists will:
• Suit up in safety vests and use real tools to carefully excavate dinosaur "bones" from sand pits.
• Record their discoveries—measuring and sketching their finds—before reconstructing a mini dinosaur skeleton.
• Use their observational skills and dino knowledge to identify the skeleton: a theropod, possibly a mini T. rex!
• Work with a Dichotomous Key to classify fossil claws, teeth, and spines.
• Use the key to examine a giant replica fossil—a T. rex femur—and calculate the dinosaur’s towering height using their own body proportions (around 3 metres tall!).
This exciting, educational workshop combines science, maths, and history in a way that will ignite curiosity and inspire young dino enthusiasts.
