In November 2017, the City of Ryde sought community feedback on a proposal to install continuous double centrelines and parking control on one side of High Street, Gladesville.  Due to resident concerns, Council did not proceed with this proposal and notified residents in late December 2017 that Council will continue to assess all comments received and will determine an appropriate way forward.

PAST PROPOSAL UPDATE

Council has now assessed all the comments and suggestions received from local residents.  Altogether, 17 possible solutions were suggested by the residents. From these suggestions, six (6) have been combined in a new proposal. A summary of the remaining 11 suggested solutions is available here,(PDF, 96KB) detailing why Council will not be proceeding with them.

WHAT ARE THE NEW CHANGES BEING CONSIDERED?

Taking previous feedback into consideration, the City of Ryde proposes the following improvements:

  • Convert the ‘STOP’ control priority at the intersection from The Strand to High Street
  • Install ‘NO STOPPING’ and dividing linemarking at the bend in High Street and Westminster Road
  • Install 10 metres of statutory ‘NO STOPPING’ and dividing linemarking at the following intersections:
    • High Street and Ganora Street
    • High Street and Kennedy Street
    • High Street and Short Street
WHY ARE THE CHANGES BEING CONSIDERED?

Changing the ‘STOP’ control priority at the intersection from The Strand to High Street will slow down traffic on High Street and discourage drivers using High Street, reduce traffic speed and improve safety.

When cars are park on both sides of the road, there is insufficient space for two vehicles to pass, which reduces access for emergency vehicles and increases the likelihood of a collision. Installing ‘NO STOPPING’ and dividing linemarking at the bend in High Street and Westminster Road will provide space for two separate travel lanes and improve safety at the bend.

Installing statutory 10 metres of ‘NO STOPPING’ at each intersection with High Street will improve safety and visibility at intersections. These improvements will also reinforce the Road Rules for parking at intersections.
