Upgrade and Realignment of Princes Street between Blaxland Road

Consultation closed on 24 October 2019

The City of Ryde is seeking feedback on a proposal to upgrade and realign Princes Street, Ryde, to increase parking and improve safety. These proposed works are identified in Council’s 2019/20 Delivery Program.

What are the proposed changes?

Council is proposing the following improvements:

  • Install new 60 degree reverse-in angled car parking, providing 26 additional spaces on the western-side of Princes Street, between Blaxland Road and Argyle Street (the existing arrangement is parallel parking).
  • Widening the nature strip between Argyle Street and Buffalo Road, shifting the existing kerb line 1.2 metres.
  • Narrowing of the median islands from 5.4 metres to 3 metres.
  • Reconstruction of affected driveways to suit new kerb alignment, including elimination of scraping on driveway crossings to all private properties.
  • Reconstruction of stormwater drainage pits to suit new kerb alignment.
  • New bus turning area at the southern end of Princes Street.
  • Footpath upgrades including pram ramps.

As part of the proposed upgrade, existing trees within the median islands that are affected by the narrowing will be removed. However, replacement planting of new trees of a different species in the new median islands will occur, in addition to new tree planting in the widened nature strip between Argyle Street and Buffalo Road.

Will there be any trees impacted?

As part of the proposed upgrade, existing trees within the median islands that are affected by the narrowing will be removed. However, replacement planting of new trees of a native species in the new median islands will occur, in addition to new tree planting in the widened nature strip between Argyle Street and Buffalo Road.

We have included an artist’s impression showing the proposed improvements with the trees in the image representing new native tree size in approximately five (5) years-time.

However, if Council is able to retain the existing palm trees in the area, we would like to hear if the community would prefer the option of having the palm trees replanted in the newly aligned nature strip rather than the proposed planting of new native trees, as shown in the artist impression.

Why are the changes being considered?

The proposed improvements will increase parking availability in the area for residents, visitors and users of Ryde Park by over 26 spaces. The upgraded road will also be complaint with all relevant safety standards, where applicable.
