City of Ryde would like to express its deepest condolences to those affected by the recent tragedy in India’s western Gujarat state, where a suspension bridge collapsed into the Machchhu River on 30 October. At least 132 people were killed in the incident.

Overcrowding and a premature re-opening of the bridge following recent renovations have been blamed for its collapse.

City of Ryde Mayor Clr Jordan Lane acknowledged those impacted by the incident, “The bridge tragedy in India has sent shockwaves through the world and reached us here in Ryde.

“I would like to express my deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible incident, particularly those within our local Indian community.”
