Understanding and working effectively with multicultural communities

You are invited to join us for a free training session for aged care workers and providers.

This interactive workshop provides the space for participants to stop and reflect on how they can enhance their understanding of working inclusively of cultural diversity with colleagues, clients, and within the community.

Understanding the core elements of cultural humility, self-awareness, managing unconscious bias and curiosity will be explored and applied to everyday life through activities and discussion.

Learners will:

  • Apply a framework for working with a culturally-responsive approach
  • Reflect on the impact of cultural identities, beliefs and values on everyday interactions
  • Identify common ground to work collaboratively
  • Implement a strategy for managing unconscious bias to enhance engagement
  • Explore the impact of power differentials
  • Apply the model of intersectionality to address disadvantage for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Presenter: Loma Cuevas-Hewitt (she/her) Diversity and Inclusion Facilitator from SSI.

Loma is an accomplished facilitation and research professional. She holds a PhD in Sociology & Anthropology from the University of Western Australia and has over ten years' experience working across a range of education and research settings, including academia, not-for-profit organisations, and private consulting firms. A consistent thread throughout Loma’s diverse career is her unwavering passion for social justice, with a particular focus on advancing the rights of women, the LGBTIQ+ community, and culturally and racially marginalised groups.
