City of Ryde has welcomed the announcement by the NSW Government this week that it will be providing $500 million in funding to local governments to help repair flood-damaged roads across the State.

2022 saw unprecedented flooding events in New South Wales causing potholes and other road hazards.

Funding under the NSW Government’s Regional and Local Roads Repair program will be provided to local governments based on the length of the road network and will be used to fund road maintenance and new technology to help track and prioritise repairs.

A report released in December 2022 by the NRMA, entitled Fix Our Broken Roads, showed that NSW councils faced a $1.9-billion backlog in 2020/21 to maintain roads to a safe standard.

City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM thanked the NSW Government for the funding program.

“City of Ryde’s road network extends to 320 kilometres and, like many local government areas, was badly impacted by adverse weather in 2022. While Council staff have been working tirelessly and proactively to fix our roads, this funding provides a welcome boost to potentially help us do more and, in some cases, sooner.

“I am looking forward to receiving more detailed information from the NSW Government regarding the allocation of funding.

“In the meantime I encourage our residents to continue to report any potholes so that Council has all the information we need to respond as quickly as possible.”
