Heritage acknowledges our past and can help improve our future. The City of Ryde currently has 173 heritage properties and 5 heritage conservation areas listed on its Heritage Schedule (Council's heritage list). Having these tangible links to our past captures the charm of our area and their listing helps balance all the changes occurring in the area.

Recently, a Heritage Review was commissioned and it proposed the following items to be added to Council’s heritage list:

  • 44 heritage items (individual properties with heritage significance) 11 of these are Council or Government owned.
  • 6 heritage conservation areas (an area that has heritage significance)
  • 2 archaeological sites (the former Squire’s Brewery and Halvorsen’s Boat Yard in Putney and the Glades Bay Baths in Gladesville).

Full details of the proposed listings can be found as part of the documents in the menu on the right.

We also have an interactive online map that shows where the proposed items listed above are located. Click here to view the map.

The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment as a delegate of the Minister has issued a Gateway Determination enabling the proposed changes to Council’s Local Environmental Plan to be publicly exhibited under section 3.34(2) of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.

Council is not the plan making authority for this Planning Proposal. The results of this community consultation will be reported to Council and Council’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Minister and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment together with a request to finalise and make the plan.
