A huge congratulations to this year’s Citizen of the Year Award winners, who were announced at a special ceremony I attended last week.
Every year the City of Ryde publicly acknowledges and recognises the outstanding accomplishments by individuals in our community who have excelled in their chosen field. This year’s winners are Maria Gharemanian (Young Citizen of the Year) and Ross Forster (Citizen of the Year).
Maria supports the local Armenian community by volunteering her time and skills at a community club Hamazgaine Nairi & Homenetmen Ararat combined community chapters, where she has served as an executive board member since 2019. She has also been involved in fundraising activities and provides care for a local elderly community.
Volunteer coach Ross Forster has worked with Ryde Athletics for over 40 years and still currently coaches three afternoons a week. Over the years he has acted in many volunteer roles within the athletics community and has played a crucial role in setting up Ryde Athletics’ fundraising activities to provide travel grants to their athletes who represent NSW or Australia.
Thank you to our Australia Day Ambassador, accomplished singer Kamahl, who wowed us with his touching speech and performance at the awards evening. You can see Kamahl perform live again at our Backyard BBQ event tomorrow – more details of the event are below.
I hope you can join me tomorrow, 26 January, for our Backyard BBQ event at Meadowbank Park.
Australia Day is a day to reflect on our past, accept the truth of our history, respect that we all have a contribution to make to the Story of Australia and celebrate being part of a diverse and multicultural nation.
Kicking off at 4.00pm, make sure you come down early as the first 1,500 people will be able to get a free sausage sizzle! Food trucks will also be available onsite.
The kids can enjoy free craft activities, free face painting and enjoy the live entertainment. The famous bubble lady, Spin Joy the hula hoopists and our Australian Bouncing Kangaroos will be making appearances too.
At the skatepark there will be free skate workshops for the kids, as well as other free sports activities for the family to enjoy. At the end of the evening you can sit down and enjoy the fireworks at 9.00pm.

The City of Ryde Seniors' Celebration occurs each year around the NSW Seniors Festival, with a month-long program of events celebrating the valuable contribution seniors make to our community.
There is an impressive line-up of events being held this year in late January and February, most of which are free. From guided walks and tours to exercise classes, concerts, art and craft workshops and information sessions on government services, there is truly something for everyone.
Don't miss out on this great opportunity to learn about the local services, try new experiences and meet others within the community!
