Tree Selection and Establishment

Planting trees on your property provides many benefits, including shade, habitat for wildlife, improved air quality, and enhanced property value. Choosing the right tree and caring for it properly will help ensure it thrives for years to come.

Choosing the Right Tree

When selecting a tree, consider the following:

  1. Size of your property
    • Large properties with open space may suit larger canopy trees.
    • Smaller properties are better suited to compact or small-growing species.
    • Consider how shade, leaf fall, and tree canopy may affect your property and neighbours.
  2. Planting location
    • Draw a plan of your property showing buildings, driveways, paths, fences, and any overhead or underground services.
    • Consider potential issues such as overshadowing, privacy, and interference with pipes, powerlines, or driveways.
    • Remember that neighbours may request pruning if branches overhang their property.
  3. Environmental conditions
    • Soil type and local climate influence which species will thrive.
    • Damp clay soils, sandy waterfront areas, and exposed windy ridges all require different tree choices.
    • Take note of these conditions before planting.
  4. Purpose of the tree
    • Shade (all year or seasonal)?
    • Stabilising soil or drying damp areas?
    • A landscape feature or focal point?
    • Attracting birds, insects, or other wildlife?
Understanding your goals will guide the best tree choice.

Caring for Your Tree

Newly planted trees require care in the first few years to establish strong roots and healthy growth.

  • Watering: Use a watering can or hose; twice weekly in summer and once weekly in winter for the first year.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around the base (up to 75mm deep, keeping clear of the trunk). Hardwood chips are best. Avoid grass clippings.
  • Protection: Keep mowers and whipper snippers away from the base. A mulch circle helps protect the trunk.

How do I plant a tree?

Part 6 of the City of Ryde Tree Management Technical Manual (TMTM) provides a step-by-step guide to successful tree planting. It includes practical advice on selecting the right tree, handling and positioning it, preparing the planting hole, staking, mulching, and ongoing care.
