Constitution Road Rock Cut-Face Widening

Project type  Traffic and Transport
 Project value  750,000
 Project Status  Tender Phase

Works relate to the rock cut face widening of the Angas Street Bridge abutment and construction of a footpath connection between Bowden Street and See Street, Meadowbank. Works also include a new pedestrian crossing at See Street and Constitution Road.

Project Update

In December 2022, the City of Ryde informed residents about several planned road safety improvement works on Constitution Road, Meadowbank.

The initial phase of these improvements has been completed, and the council is currently prioritising the completion of a pedestrian connection beneath the Angas Street Bridge, specifically on the southern side of Constitution Road.

What will the works include?

The works will be completed over three stages and will include:

Stage 1 – Relocation of the Constitution Road/ Bowden Street Pedestrian Crossing

  • The at-grade pedestrian crossing will be moved west away from the roundabout to promote better pedestrian safety
  • These works have been completed as of December 2022

Stage 2 – Connection of the footpath below Angas Street Bridge

This will involve the cutting of the rock abutment below the Angas Street Bridge, to connect both sides of the footpath

Over the last few months, Council has been actively seeking contractors to carry out the Stage 2 works. However, finding a contractor with the necessary qualifications, expertise in the specialised nature of the project, and adherence to safety requirements has proven challenging. As a result, a suitable contractor has not been secured yet.

Council plans to re-issue tenders for these works, with the intention of commencing the project by late October 2023 (Pending the availability of a suitable contractor).

Stage 3 – Construction of a new at-grade pedestrian crossing at See Street

A new pedestrian crossing will be built across Constitution Road at See Street to improve access to both Meadowbank Station and TAFE.

The continuation of these works will occur after the completion of the Stage 2 works, which are anticipated to take place in late 2023.
