Tell us a bit about who you are and what kind of creative work you make.

I’m a local singer-songwriter and I also teach singing and songwriting privately. With over two decades of performing and working across a range of genres including pop, rock, country, jazz, gospel and blues- they’ve all played a part in influencing my own music. I’m passionate about creating original songs that genuinely connect with people, and I love helping my students grow their confidence and skills.

What is a creative project that you’ve worked on that you’re really proud of? Why?

I’ve just released my second album, Open Road, and as an independent artist I’m incredibly proud of it. I poured so much heart into writing and recording these songs - I was also lucky enough to collaborate with some amazing musicians along the way. I hope it finds a home in people’s lives and playlists.

Are there any special processes, techniques or tools you use to make your creative work?

People often ask whether I start with lyrics or music, but my writing process shifts depending on the song. One technique I use a lot is a quick five-minute free-write around an idea or prompt — there’s usually a little gem hidden in there that becomes the seed of a song. From there, I’ll grab my guitar or sit at the keyboard, play a few chords, and let the natural rhythm of the words guide the tone. I lean into whatever comes up and let the song reveal itself.

What’s the most challenging part of working as an artist / creative?

For me, the challenge is balancing the creative and business sides of being an artist. I have to look after the practical things: the promotion, planning and admin — while keeping my self-belief strong and protecting the joy of creativity. I’ve found that setting up good routines, working with mentors and staying connected to other creatives helps me stay grounded, motivated, and up to date with the current best practices.

What’s your favourite part of working as an artist / creative?

It’s hard to choose between writing, recording or performing. There’s nothing like the moment a song comes together, the magic of being in the studio, or the energy of performing something original for an audience that connects with it. None of it gets old and I’m always inspired to keep improving.

Whereabouts do you look for creative ideas? Who or what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the world around me—everyday life, stories, and the full range of human experiences. Musically, artists like Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, Bonnie Raitt, Crowded House and Bernard Fanning have influenced my writing to name just a few. I also love cowriting; creating something with another person often leads to songs I never would have written on my own, and that collaboration is always inspiring.

Where can we find out more about your work and get in touch?
